My Fitness Journey

In fitness, as in life, we gain more, not from having reached the destination, but from the journey to get there.  If you’ve read the “About Me” Section of this blog, you’ve read about parts of my journey.  I let myself go over the years, but it wasn’t just laziness on my part, it was also a lack of understanding of my own body.  To give you a little history of my weight problem, lets back up to the days before P90X and Beachbody.  I used to workout regularly, but my nutrition sucked, so that soon after I would experience some progress in getting back in shape, I would soon hit a plateau and then get discouraged, and soon quit trying.  The weight would go back up and with some extra pounds.  The weight slowly over time creeped higher and higher, I would come home from work in the afternoons and just sit on the couch from doing no physical activity.  I would catch myself dozing off at traffic lights, it was really getting bad.

The Doctor Visit

After I began to see my doctor about my weight problems, I began to see why it was so hard for me to lose weight when it just seemed to fall off of others doing the same activities. Insulin resistance, low testosterone, lack of restful sleep due to sleep apnea.  Were these activities causing the weight gain, or was the weight gain causing them?  Either way, the weight had to come off, and I would have to work harder to get it off.  I had lost a few pounds and was still at 246 pounds.

P90X – Round 1, Day 1

Day one of P90X in March 1, 2010.  Here is the first day.  It seems a life time ago, and I can’t believe I was that big:

I had set a goal of 180 pounds for myself, and I realized that no matter how great P90X was, I would not lose 75 pounds in 90 days, so this was the long haul.  Fitness is not a sprint after all, it’s a marathon.

P90X – After Round 1

After Round 1 I lost 28 pounds.  From looking at the pictures, it did not appear that there was much change taking place, but the way I felt was incredible.   My energy levels were higher, I felt stronger and I did not have as many aches and pains as before.  Now that I knew how much weight I could lose in 90 days, I could set goals for myself for the next rounds, more importantly I could begin to see how long it would take me to reach my goal.  NINE MONTHS.  At nine months I guessed I would reach my goal.

P90X – Round 2

During Round 2 I was excited, I could begin to see more changes.  Something happened though halfway through Round 2, I hit a plateau.  Plateaus are a normal part of weight loss from what I had learned.  You just keep working and eventually you’ll get through them.  This plateau began to drag on for weeks though with not a pound lost.  In fact I gained a few pounds.  One of the great tools the Team Beachbody has is the discussion board at TeamBeachbody.com

I began to look for posts on plateaus, and found a great one.  I described my situation and soon after I got an answer – check you calories.  Sure enough I had let my calories dip too low.  Within a week of raising my calories back up the weight began to fall off.  Within 3 weeks though the plateau hit again and no matter what I tried, nothing worked.  It was now getting to the end of Round 2 and I was still not at my goal.  It was then that I decided to start tailoring my nutrition to my conditions.  I began to start cutting down the carbs, increasing the protein, and I even cut out grains and legumes completely from my diet.  IT WORKED!  The pounds began to fall off.  By the end of Round 2 I had reached my goal of losing 30 pounds, so mow I was down to 198 pounds – BELOW 200!!  WOO HOO!!  This was a great day for me.  It was at this time that I started to have side effects from my cholesterol medication.  I was starting to have muscle and joint aches, and was getting forgetful of things more often.  In spite of my doctor’s advice I gave up the statins.  I decided at that time to try to lower my cholesterol by diet and exercise (best move I ever made).

P90X – Round 3

Round 3 started in January 2011.  Now it was crunch time. the prize was only 90 days away.  Armed with the nutrition plan that worked for me and the fitness program that would not let me quit, I could do this!  Round Three was my best round ever, but I had found that now that I was getting closer to my goal, that the weight was getting harder to drop.  Isn’t that always the case though, the closer you get to your goal, the harder it is to get the weight off.  By the end of Round 3 I had reached my goal of 180 pounds.  What a day!  I had not been 180  since my senior year in High School, and I was 2 inches shorter then.  The funny thing was that I had fixed that number 180 in my mind as the perfect weight for me, but when I got there, 180 pounds did not look like what I expected it to.  I was not where I wanted to be, so Round 4 was next!

P90X – Round 4

This round I decided that since weight was not the same as body Image, I would not set a weight goal, but just continue to go as far as I could go.  I continued to push myself and keep up with my nutrition, eventually getting down to 168.  I had not weighed 268 since I was in seventh grade.  This was unbelievable to me!  The most important change that took place was that I had manged to get my Total Cholesterol to below 198, WITHOUT MEDS!!  It was working.

Here is the transformation after 4 Rounds of P90X:

My Fitness Journey

What Now?

At this point I figured I would change this up and try a round of Insanity. It was a great program as you can read about in my Insanity Review by CLICKING HERE, but I guess I was at my ideal weight, because there were no changes in appearance, but I noticed a drastic improvement in my stamina.

My Fitness Journey

As a Beachbody Coach, I get to hear all the talk about upcoming programs, and the latest was coming – P90X2!  I ordered it as soon as I was able and jumped right on it.  WOW! what a program.  They totally rethought this one.  You can read about it here.  I began to put on more muscle, my core was stronger, and my balance also improved.

My Fitness Journey

After a couple Rounds of X2, I began to notice that the weight was creeping back on.  After investigating why this was happening, I began to realize that my body had undergone many changes, such that I had become a completely different person, both physically and physiologically, and still my nutrition had not changed.  Despite my activity level, and nutrition, my age was creeping up on me too.  The doctor told me that my testosterone levels and my thyroid levels were out of balance, and until I got my hormone levels in balance, I would have a harder time getting the weight to come off.  I needed to start with a clean slate before I went any further.

It was about this time that I was introduced to the Beachbody Ultimate Reset by a fellow coach.  Her changes were visibly unbelievable, and in just 21 days.  Read about my Ultimate Reset Review HERE.  I decided to try it.  In 21 days, my weight had dropped and my hormone levels had improved in all areas: however, even though my testosterone levels had increased 34%, they were still lower than my Dr. would have wanted them to be.  She prescribed testosterone injections since the topical applications did not seem to be doing the job.  This helped in that I was able to start increasing muscle mass, but I also began retaining water.  We’re still trying to figure that one out, but when we do I am confident I will once again start to drop the weight.  Over all, the improvement to my health has been amazing. I am NEVER going back to the way I was, and it is a constant journey to stay fit as I move down life’s path, but I am up for the challenge.  Are you? Remember in fitness as in life, it’s not about the destination,it’s about the journey.  Live for the journey.
