Shakeology Ingredients – Super Fruit/Antioxidant Blend provides Antioxidant Support and Promotes a Healthy Heart, and Optimal Blood Pressure.
What are Antioxidants?
The production of harmful molecules called free radicals causes oxidative stress to occur on the body. Free radicals are chemically active atoms or molecular fragments that have a positive or negative electrical charge due to an excess or deficient number of electrons. Because they have one or more unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly unstable. They grab or donate electrons, to and from your body’s own molecules, thereby damaging cells, proteins, and DNA (genetic material). The same oxidative process also causes oils to become rancid, peeled apples to turn brown, and iron to rust.
Antioxidants as you may have guessed, are substances that are capable of preventing or even reversing the damaging, but normal, effects of the physiological process of oxidation in animal tissue. Antioxidants are nutrients and enzymes that are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.
Let’s take a look at these powerful ingredients:
Shakeology Ingredients – Blueberry
Blueberries provide an excellent source of vitamin A which helps prevent vision loss due to aging. The antioxidants in blueberries can prevent cell damage by neutralizing the radicals and helping ward off diseases. Blueberries also prevent inflammation that is a known cause of aging diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease and brain aging. According to a study conducted by Louisiana State University’s Pennigton Biomedical Research Center, published in the Journal of Nutrition, “We now know that compounds in blueberries may help obese, non-diabetic individuals maintain healthy blood glucose levels.”
Blueberries like those found in Shakeology Ingredients – Super Fruit/Antioxidant Blend contain a significant amount of the antioxidant anthocyanadins that possess great nutritional value. In addition to anthocyanins, blueberries also contain other antioxidants like resveratrol, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, and tannins that help prevent growth of cancer cells.
Shakeology Ingredients – Cacao
The scientific name for the the Cacao tree literally translates to “Food of the Gods”. Cacao was used extensively in early central America by local tribes as food, in religious ceremonies, and even as currency. It was found to be used in beverages as far back as 1900 B.C. Today Cacao is the primary ingredient in chocolate. Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. In fact if you constantly crave chocolate, it is a good indication
that you are deficient in magnesium. It also contains the “bliss chemicals” phenylethylamine (PEA) and anandamide. PEA is an adrenal-related chemical that we create naturally when we’re excited. It also plays a role in feeling focused and alert because it causes your pulse rate to quicken. Anandamide causes changes in blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, leading to feelings of excitement and alertness. Anandamide works like amphetamines to increase mood and decrease depression, but it is not addictive like caffeine or illegal with undesirable side-effects like amphetamines.
The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture, is used to measure the effectiveness of antioxidants to absorb free radicals that cause cell and tissue damage. The higher the ORAC score, the higher the level of antioxidants present in the food. Raw Cacao like that used in the Shakeology Ingredients – Super Fruit/Antioxidant Blend has an ORAC Score of 95,500 per 100 grams while Blueberries (above) have a score of 2400. WOW! Even Milk Chocolate has a score of 6740 (but it has all that sugar too).

Bilberry has been used in European medicine for nearly a thousand years, primarily to treat diarrhea. Bilberry extract is used to treat many ailments and conditions. Some studies have shown an improvement of symptoms of a condition called chronic venous insufficiency. This condition which occurs when valves in veins in the legs that carry blood to the heart are damaged. Anthocyanosides may strengthen blood vessels, improve circulation, and prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Shakeology Ingredients – Grape Seed
Grapes have been known for thousands of years for their nutritional and medicinal value. Grapes contain oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), which have been touted as powerful antioxidants. A study of healthy volunteers found that taking grape seed extract did substantially increase levels of antioxidants in their blood. There is also good evidence that grape seed extract can help treat chronic venous insufficiency and edema.
Researchers from the Colorado Cancer Center reporting in the prestigious journal Carcinogenesis determined that supplementing mice with grape seed extract (GSE) reduced the growth of certain cancers by up to 67%, lowered the rate
of progression of deadly tumors and DNA damage while inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) of the cancer cells. The team determined that grape seed extract both
damages cancer cells’ DNA, and stops the pathways that allow repair.
Grape seed has antioxidant, antiallergenic, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties and it can be instrumental in helping the body fight viruses, allergens, and, as discussed above, carcinogens. Further studies on humans will need to be conducted to confirm these findings, but it is potentially great news.
