Couples definitely have an advantage when they work together.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and conducted University College of London found that couples who undertake a fitness program together were three times more likely to succeed at their goals than those going it alone. The Study, entitled: The influence of partner’s behavior on health behavior change: the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, looked at 3722 married and cohabitating couples. It focused on three areas of lifestyle or behavior: smoking, exercise and obesity. In all areas, the study found that when one partner in a couple changed to a healthier behavior, the other partner was more likely to make positive health behavior changes than if their partner remained unhealthy.
Getting Older – Fun with Niacin
Fun with Niacin As we age we begin to find more and more “things”. One of mine is high cholesterol. To lower my cholesterol, my doctor first tried statin drugs (Lipitor, Crestor, etc). Not long after I began taking Lipitor, I began experiencing muscle and joint aches and had problems remembering things I needed to do. They switched me to another statin, and no change. We tried diet and exercise, and that had some positive effects, but didn’t bring it low enough. The next option was to try Niacin or vitamin B3.
Weekend Binge Eating – Insulin Resistance Can Occur in Only 2 Days!!
Thinking of Weekend Binge Eating – Insulin Resistance Can Occur in Only 2 Days!!
Obesity is very common in America, and is often associated with a group of health problems collectively known as Metabolic Syndrome. Insulin resistance is a key component of this syndrome. For those of us that have insulin resistance, or pre-diabetes as it’s otherwise known, losing weight to get fit is a hard task. You have to be diligent and stick to your eating regime to see long-term results. Sometimes though, we get those long weekend getaway trips, where we decide to just forsake the routine and live it up, or maybe we decide to stick to the regime for five days and treat ourselves on the weekend. During football season this is an easy trap to fall into, the tailgating at games, the parties for Super Bowl Sunday. What could it hurt, right? We’ll go back to eating healthy on Monday. You may want to rethink that idea. According to a recent study publish in Science Transitional Medicine, eating large amounts of high calorie food can cause changes to your metabolism that lead to a state of insulin resistance, which over time sets the body up to be more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes. Get this, those changes can occur in as little as 2 DAYS!
Shakeology Ingredients – Super Green Phytonutrient Blend
The more I learn about the ingredients in Shakeology, the more excited I get! NOTHING comes close to this stuff! In this post I will discuss Shakeology Ingredients – Super Green Phytonutrient Blend. The ingredients of this major part of the Healthiest Meal of the Day include: Moringa, Chlorella, Spirulina, Spinach, Barley Grass, Kamut Grass, Wheat Grass, and Oat Grass. Their major role is to help alkalinize the body and to promote detoxification of the liver, kidneys and blood to restore health and vitality. Let’s look at these ingredients
Shakeology Ingredients – Super Fruit/Antioxidant Blend provides Antioxidant Support and Promotes a Healthy Heart, and Optimal Blood Pressure.
What are Antioxidants?
The production of harmful molecules called free radicals causes oxidative stress to occur on the body. Free radicals are chemically active atoms or molecular fragments that have a positive or negative electrical charge due to an excess or deficient number of electrons. Because they have one or more unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly unstable. They grab or donate electrons, to and from your body’s own molecules, thereby damaging cells, proteins, and DNA (genetic material). The same oxidative process also causes oils to become rancid, peeled apples to turn brown, and iron to rust.
Antioxidants as you may have guessed, are substances that are capable of preventing or even reversing the damaging, but normal, effects of the physiological process of oxidation in animal tissue. Antioxidants are nutrients and enzymes that are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.
Shakeology Ingredients – Super Protein Blend
In my previous post Shakeology Ingredients I discussed, in summary, all the healthy things that go into Shakeology to make it the Healthiest Meal of the Day. Let’s go a little deeper and look at each group of ingredients. In this installment let’s look at Shakeology Ingredients – Super Protein Blend. Just in case you didn’t remember, the Super Protein blend consisted of these ingredients:
Whey, Sacha Inchi, Chia, Flax, Quinoa, Amaranth, Brown Rice, Peas.
The main purpose of this Super Protein Blend is that it helps build lean muscle, improves skin and hair, supports mental clarity, and reduces cravings. Where do these proteins come from and how are they processed in the best possible manner to ensure that they are the most bio-available, or how well the body can use them.
Shakeology: Superfood in a Glass – Is this stuff for real?
Let me say, when I first started my journey to getting fit, I was VERY skeptical about Shakeology, or any meal replacement shake. We’ve all seen the vast amount of meal replacement supplements out there on the market, Body by this, and the pink drinks that make outlandish claims about helping us to lose weight and get in shape. Also, coupled with the $120 price tag for a one month supply of Shakeology – FORGET ABOUT IT!!! I could find protein supplements and meal replacements for a lot cheaper, and still get results, and I did. So you’re reading this and thinking “Okay tell me again why I need Shakeology?” Let me spend a little time explaining why.
My Fitness Journey
In fitness, as in life, we gain more, not from having reached the destination, but from the journey to get there. If you’ve read the “About Me” Section of this blog, you’ve read about parts of my journey. I let myself go over the years, but it wasn’t just laziness on my part, it was also a lack of understanding of my own body. To give you a little history of my weight problem, lets back up to the days before P90X and Beachbody. I used to workout regularly, but my nutrition sucked, so that soon after I would experience some progress in getting back in shape, I would soon hit a plateau and then get discouraged, and soon quit trying. The weight would go back up and with some extra pounds. The weight slowly over time creeped higher and higher, I would come home from work in the afternoons and just sit on the couch from doing no physical activity. I would catch myself dozing off at traffic lights, it was really getting bad.

After 4 rounds of P90X, I decided to try a round of Insanity. I figured that after bringing it for four rounds of the X that Insanity would be a piece of cake…OH MY GOD!!! I could not have been more wrong. This program is called Insanity for damn good reason. This is THE most intense cardio circuit training I have ever experienced. The warm up is more intense than some workouts. You will definitely get your money’s worth with this program.
I loved P90X, it was the program I had the most success with, but after 4 rounds, I was ready for some variety. I did a round of Insanity, but I’m not a pure cardio kind of guy. I really like the strength building aspects of resistance training. Now along comes P90X2. THIS is what I’ve been waiting for! Tony Horton and the kids have returned with an all new workout X-style. Tony’s a great guy. I got the opportunity to meet him in Las Vegas in June of 2012. When I showed him my before-and-after shots and told him that he and P90X had helped me to lose 80 pounds, not only did he congratulate me, but he yelled it out to a ballroom full of other Beachbody Coaches. What a guy.
