If your bringing it with P90X and not eating right, you’re wasting your time.  I am always asked by those using P90X to help them figure out why they only getting limited results, even though they are working out as hard as they can, or why they have no energy to complete their daily workout.  The first thing I ask them is “Are you following the nutrition plan?”  This is always followed by an awkward silent moment, then the confession that they did not even open the guide to read it. 

They all thought that by doing this intense exercise program like P90X that they would get these great results, or they think that the reason they are working out so hard is so they can keep eating like they were and still get better results.  NOPE.  It doesn’t work that way. As intense as the workout aspect of P90X is, on average, 80% of results that people achieve from P90X come not from the workout, but the nutrition.  There is a saying in the fitness community, “You can’t out train a bad diet.”  If you want extreme results, you have to use BOTH fitness AND nutrition with the emphasis on nutrition.  USE THE P90X NUTRITION PLAN!!!  Here are some steps to help you with the P90X Nutrition Plan.

Determine the calories you need

We are trained to think of nutrition to lose weight and get fit as a diet where we simply cut calories to lose weight.  While it is true that by cutting the amount of calories we consume that we will lose fat, it is also true that unless we combine that with fitness we will also lose muscle.  It is carried a step further in that we think that since lowering our calories to X amount will help us lose weight, that if we lower that amount even more we will lose more weight faster.  WRONG!!!  What happens is that if we lower our caloric intake too much, we force our bodies into starvation.  What this means is that our body begins to go into survival mode.  Our body lowers the metabolism to conserve energy, and we get tired during the day, we can’t do the normal things we do routinely much less work out.  The trick is to lower your calories slightly so that you are still eating enough to keep your body’s survival mechanism from engaging, but at the same time eating less than is required to gain weight.

The way we determine how many calories we need is to take add up the calories our body needs to operate our metabolism, the calories it needs to accomplish everyday tasks, AND the calories it needs to do an extreme home fitness program like P90X, THEN subtract about 500 calories to give you only a slight deficit to lose fat and gain muscle at a steady rate.  The P90X Nutrition Plan has a formula that will help calculate this amount.  You may be surprised and in a little bit of disbelief tho discover that you will be eating a lot more than you thought.  Trust me the plan works.

Extreme Results through Nutrition

P90X is EXTREME fitness and it requires extreme nutrition. Just as the P90X workouts change every 30 days, so does the nutrition plan.  The plan is divided into three phases:

Phase 1 – Fat Shredder

Phase 2 – Energy Booster

Phase 3 – Endurance Maximizer

In Phase 1, there is a lower amount of carbs to cause your body to utilize more if it’s stored fat as a fuel source rather than carbohydrates.  Carbohydrates are slowly increased in Phases 2 and 3 to help you maintain energy during the changes in the workouts over the next 60 days.

Eating CleanWe not only look at the amounts of food we eat, but the kinds of food we eat.  It’s about cleaning up our eating habits, focusing on the whole foods that fuel our bodies.  It also focuses on eliminating the processed garbage that, while tasting good, actually triggers mechanisms in our body all the way down to the cellular level into preventing us from getting the results we so badly want.

Think of P90X, or any Beachbody Program as if you’re building a bridge.  You build the bridge from both ends and meet in the middle: P90X:  Fitness & Nutritionexercise on one side, nutrition on the other.  If you neglect one, you don’t end up with a bridge, you end up with a really expensive pier.  You can choose to either have okay results, or you can choose to have extreme results.  You can either follow the P90X Nutrition Plan, or you can keep busting your ass everyday and undoing all the good you did working out by not eating properly to get in the best shape of your life.
